• William was the child of Elisha and Lucy Hubbard Patterson and the grandson of John Patterson, Senior. On 16 September 1851, he married Martha J. Hyatt, who may have been the sister of Berthena Hyatt Patterson. They had six children. Martha was shot by her son Bennett.
