Notes for Joseph Lafayette Hyatt:
• Joseph L. was the son of Judge Frederick Hyatt and his first wife, Anna Hume. He first married Martha Elizabeth Cason, date unknown, then married Elizabeth Harris on 10 June 1855.
• “The Reporter” 29 May 1963, page 6. Judge Joseph Hyatt, an acquaintance of President Lincoln, well enough known to the Great Emancipator to be entertained by him at the White House during the Civil War.
• Appointed by Alexander McNair and served as one of the first judges in St. Louis County. Judge Frederick Hyatt and his son, Judge Joseph Hyatt were active in the Whig political party and they were responsible for having the whipping post, as a method of punishment, being abolished in St. Louis county.
• In 1840, Thomas Fletcher built the first home in the area of Black Jack, a log house on Old Hallsferry road, just a short distance from the intersection with Parker road. James C. Richardson, one of the early pioneers and chief landowners in the north county area had built a big tobacco barn in the vicinity a few years earlier, and in 1842, the barn was purchased by Joseph L. Hyatt, who converted it into a residence. This became the second home in the new community.
